OG-SPB

Hostile vehicle mitigation for national defence

The OG-SPB is a cost-effective vehicle barrier system for all arms users that can be rapidly deployed for maxim effect in rural or urban environments using a minimum of materials.

The OG-SPB is a counter mobility system consisting of

  • 20 no. OG units
  • 60 no. 6mm x5m fixing ties
  • 20no. ground anchors for soft ground
  • Ground anchor driving tool and sledgehammer
  • Cable tensioning tool

The OG unit is a re-imagined Czech hedgehog, flat packed and slot together, this is only made possible by 21st century manufacturing processes.

The cable systems use patented technology from Gripple ltd to enable rapid connection and tensioning of the deployed system, with only an orientation briefing.

For maximum protection the system is deployed at 1.5m spacing to create a 17.5m wide barrier. Deployed in 2 rows that length increases to 25m. There are sufficient materials to connect and tension the individual units as well as tie int0 existing features or when ground conditions permit anchor every unit.

The OG-SPB has been designed with the following priorities

  • Rapid deployment of a fixed and immovable vehicle barrier.
  • Optimised to provide maximum capability that moves effortlessly through logistics systems.
  • Engineered to minimise manufacturing processes and reduce cost.
  • Reusable and recyclable.

State of the art

Counter mobility operations involve constructing and reinforcing obstacles to disrupt, fix, turn, or block attacking vehicles. When they are integrated with fires, they effectively inhibit the manoeuvre of enemy forces, increase time for target acquisition and weapon effectiveness.

The Czech hedgehog was developed in about 1935 and was used extensively by Russia in WW2 where they proved to be a simple and effective barrier especially in an urban environment that became a symbol of resistance.

The Czech hedgehog remains a mainstay or counter mobility equipment however in their classic iteration they are logistically inefficient and fabricated at point of need.

Other surface placed hostile vehicle mitigation systems are available, however they are generally designed for short term use to protect civilian crowds from terrorist threats and don’t inhibiting pedestrian traffic flow. They are designed for regular repeated use and often come on specialised stillages. They are expensive to buy and typically only offer a few linear meters of protection per package. They can be disassembled quickly without tools.

The OG-SPB is a new benchmark for speed, cost and effectiveness.
